The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Summarise the information by selecting and repotting the main features, and make com arisons where relevant.

The line graph compares the percentage of the population living in urban cities in four Southeast Asian countries from 1970 to 2020, with forecasts for 2030 to 2040. Overall, all countries show an increase, and some are expected to change their ranking.
In 1970, only 18% of Thai people lived in cities, compared to around 14% in Indonesia. Over the decades, both countries saw more people moving to cities. By 2000, both Thailand and Indonesia had reached the same level of 30%. However, Indonesia’s urban migration rate surged to 50% by 2020 and is expected to reach 60% by 2040, while Thailand’s rate is projected to be 40%.
In 1970, nearly a third (32%) of people in the Philippines lived in cities, while Malaysia was not far behind at 30%. Over the next two decades, these countries competed to see the highest rate of urban living. In constrast, by 1990, nearly half of the Filipinos lived in cities, close to Malaysia’s 47%. By 2020, Malaysia’s rate soared to 75%, while the percentage of Filipinos living in cities decreased to 45%. By 2040, it is expected that eight out of ten Malaysians will live in cities, while the percentage of Filipinos will be close to 50%.

In 1970, nearly a third (32%) of people in the Philippines lived in urban areas, a number very close to Malaysia’s. Thailand and Indonesia had lower percentages, with 18% and 14%, respectively. By 2000, Malaysia’s urban population had reached 60%, while the Philippines’ urban population was 45%. Thailand and Indonesia both reached 30% in the same year.
The forecast shows that the Philippines’ urban population will drop from first to third place, reaching 50%, which is 20% lower than Thailand’s. Malaysia and Indonesia are expected to have urban populations of 80% and 60%, respectively.
